Editorial Standards
PawSmart publishes buying guides and how-to advice for dog owners. These standards explain how we produce that content, so you can judge for yourself how much to trust it.
Independence
PawSmart is editorially independent. No brand, retailer, or advertiser can pay to appear in a guide, change a ranking, or alter what we say about a product. Affiliate partnerships and display ads keep the site free, but they never influence our recommendations or our verdicts.
How we research and choose products
Our recommendations are research-based. For each guide we examine manufacturer specifications and safety documentation, relevant standards and certifications, guidance from veterinarians and qualified trainers, and the consensus that emerges across large numbers of verified owner reviews. We prioritize safety first, then durability, then everyday usability and value. Where we have hands-on experience with a category we draw on it, but we don’t claim to have lab-tested every product — we’re transparent that our picks are researched selections, not paid placements.
Accuracy and sourcing
Health, safety, and behavior information is grounded in widely accepted veterinary guidance and reputable organizations such as the AKC, ASPCA, and AVMA. We link to primary sources where it helps, and we flag where expert opinion is genuinely divided rather than pretending there’s one right answer.
Updates and corrections
Products get discontinued, prices move, and advice evolves. We review and update our guides periodically and note when a page was last updated. If you spot an error, email woof@pawsmartpet.com and we’ll investigate and correct it promptly.

Everything on PawSmart is general information, not a diagnosis or treatment plan. Always consult your own veterinarian about your dog’s specific needs.
How products are selected
Candidate products come from three places: what new owners actually search for, what appears repeatedly in owner communities, and what manufacturers publish specifications for. We compare candidates on safety, durability, real-world value and fit for new owners, using manufacturer documentation, published safety standards and the pattern across large numbers of verified owner reviews. We name the product we would buy first in each category and we state honest drawbacks for every pick. If a category is dominated by products we wouldn't buy, we say so.
Researched vs. hands-on
PawSmart guides are research-based unless a page explicitly says otherwise. We do not claim hands-on lab testing we haven't done. Where a recommendation is based on specifications and owner-review analysis rather than personal use, the methodology box on that page says exactly that.
How affiliate relationships work
Affiliate links never decide our picks. We choose products first, then add affiliate links where a program exists. Our recommendations are identical whether or not a brand pays a commission, and several picks across the site carry no affiliate link at all. As an Amazon Associate, PawSmart earns from qualifying purchases.
Updates and corrections
Guides are reviewed and updated as products change, prices move and veterinary guidance evolves; each article shows its last update date. If you spot an error, email woof@pawsmartpet.com — corrections are made on the page itself, and substantive corrections are noted in the text.
Our use of AI
We're transparent about this: PawSmart uses AI tools to assist with research, drafting and illustrative imagery. Every article is directed, reviewed, fact-checked and edited by our founder before publication, and the editorial judgments — what to recommend, what to warn against, what the evidence does and doesn't support — are human decisions. Illustrative images and videos on the site (like our category banners and hero footage) may be AI-generated; they are decorative and are never presented as product photography or testing evidence. Adrian’s author portrait is digitally enhanced from a genuine photograph. His identity and facial features have not been replaced.
Authors and reviewers
PawSmart is a small independent publication. Articles are researched, written and edited by Adrian Furletti, the site's founder. We don't list reviewers we don't have: where a page names a reviewer in future (for example a veterinary professional reviewing a health guide), that person will have genuinely reviewed and approved the page.
